1. How do we make God’s acquaintance?
Answer: “O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works” (Psalm 105:1-2).
“Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren. Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth” (1 Chronicles 16:7-12).
2. When did man first call upon the name of the LORD?

4. Of whom do we have the next record of calling upon the Lord?
Answer: “And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD” (Genesis 12:8).
5. Did this become a practice with Abraham?

6. By what title did God introduce Himself to Abraham?
Answer: “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Genesis 17:1).
NOTE: There is nothing above “God Almighty.” He is the supreme Almighty One. He is the Creator and the Eternal. All these appellations are titles emphasizing the greatness of the Only, Eternal, Living God.
7. What did God say to Moses to substantiate this?
Answer: “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them” (Exodus 6:3).
NOTE: God appeared to his children as the “God Almighty” from Genesis to Exodus 3:13. How God introduced Himself to Moses and the children of Israel will be the subject of our next lesson.
8. How did Isaac speak of the Father in Heaven?
Answer: “And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people” (Genesis 28:3).
9. How did God make Himself known to Jacob?

11. When Jacob addressed his sons how did he make the Father known unto them?
Answer: “And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father … Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb” (Genesis 49:1-2, 25).
12. What question did Moses ask of the Father?
Answer: “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” (Exodus 3:13).
13. How did God answer Moses’ question?
Answer: “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations” (Exodus 3:14-15).
NOTE: God revealed Himself to Moses and the children of Israel by being called “The Great I AM.” While the Israelites had been in Egypt they had learned of so many Egyptian deities. Each one said through their oracles: “I Am the God of the Nile,” or “I Am the God of the Cattle,” or “I Am the God of the Lightning,” etc. Each god claimed he was the greatest of all. Therefore the Father in heaven used the title “I Am that Am.” “I Am the only true God.” “I Am the one that will lead you out of Egypt.” Abraham, Isaac and Jacob knew God only as the “Almighty One.” God continually addresses Israel as “The Great I AM.” By this title they understood Him far better and were able to grasp His greatness.
“Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you” (Exodus 31:13).
“That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice” (Judges 6:8-10).
“Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God” (Psalm 50:7).
14. In the Hebrew Jehovah is written Y H W H or I AM that Am. What is the existence of the great I Am?
Answer: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2).
15. What did the great “I AM” do for the children of Israel?
Answer: “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Exodus 20:2).
16. When Moses praised God for deliverance what did he call Him?
Answer: “The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name” (Exodus 15:1-2).
17. When Moses went up into the Mount to receive the Ten Commandments what did God say to Him?
Answer: “And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy” (Exodus 33:19).
18. How did God then define His title as He said He would to Moses?
Answer: “And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation” (Exodus 34:5-7).
19. In Moses’ exhortation to obedience who does he say we must fear?
Answer: “If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance” (Deuteronomy 28:58-59).
NOTE: There are many verses which declare that he is the “I Am.” What are some of these scriptures?
“I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God” (Exodus 16:12).
“For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44).
“And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 23:22).
“And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice” (Judges 6:10).
“And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the LORD your God … Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD your God … I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them … And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God” (Ezekiel 20:5,7,19,20).
20. How did God address Jeremiah?
Answer: “Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:26-27).
